Nick Matthews was the victor in the first-ever Monday Junior Qualifier at the 2018 Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship.
The 14-year-old shot a wonderful round of +1 (28) across nine holes of the Cromwell Course, and sealed his place in the Professional Championship, taking place on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th August.
This is a huge opportunity for Matthews to not only play alongside some of the sport’s greatest players of all time, but also experience the set up and atmosphere of a professional championship – an opportunity very rarely given to youngsters in the sport.
Matthews was part of an 18-strong field of youngsters, all hoping to impress ahead of the Professional Championship, with professionals including the past two winners of the BP3, Richard O’Hanlon and Mark Mouland, Carl Suneson, Brendan McGovern, Phillip Walton and Glenn Joyner.
While Matthews took the overall win, there were several other impressive performances from the field, many hitting scores that wouldn’t be out of place during the Professional Championship. In second place, was Ed Keech, hitting +2 (29), as part of Joyner’s team, which went on to win the overall team prize, with a combined score of 52. Rounding out the top three, were Joe Buenfield and Sam West.
Tournament host Tony Jacklin CBE handed out the prizes alongside owner of Nailcote Hall, Rick Cressman, as a great day of competitive golf was brought to a close at the golf course’s clubhouse, Charley’s Bar.
