David Park leads Champions (UK) plc British Par 3 Championship Pro-Am after opening round

David Park holds a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Champions (UK) plc British Par 3 Championship Pro-Am at Nailcote Hall, Warwickshire.

Park produced the standout score on Wednesday, carding a five-under-par round of 49 on the Cromwell Course to take a narrow advantage into the second and final day of the professional competition.

Steven Tiley is his closest challenger after opening with a four-under 50, while Scott Drummond sits alone in third following a round of 51, three under par.

Defending champion Carl Suneson remains firmly in contention after carding a two-under 52. He is joined on that score by Anthony Grenier, leaving the pair three shots off Park’s overnight lead.

There is further experience packed just behind them, with Gary Wolstenholme MBE, Philip Golding, Mike Browne, Morgan Jackson and Jarmo Sandelin all opening with one-under-par rounds of 53.

The tightly packed leaderboard leaves the Championship finely poised heading into Thursday, with only four shots separating the leader from the group at one under.

Park will nevertheless have the advantage after negotiating the demanding Cromwell Course in the fewest strokes on day one, as he looks to add his name to a Championship roll of honour which includes the likes of Paul Lawrie OBE, Robert Rock, Tommy Fleetwood and reigning champion Suneson.

The Pro-Am forms the competitive centrepiece of the 93rd British Par 3 Championship, taking place at Nailcote Hall from 11 to 14 August. The professionals compete across 36 holes on Wednesday and Thursday.

Tournament host and two-time Major champion Tony Jacklin CBE believes those demands are part of what has made the event such an enduring test for players across generations.

Jacklin told media: “I always look forward to meeting a lot of old friends and seeing familiar faces from over the years. The fact the tournament has had the likes of Charley Hull, Tommy Fleetwood and Aaron Rai across its recent years is so significant. I think their success speaks volumes about what par-three golf can do.

“Golf is ultimately about dealing with adversity, and that little golf course demands exactly that. It has not changed much over the years, but if anything, it has become harder. You cannot afford to miss greens, and you have to keep your head.

“All the qualities that golf demands are tested there, and many excellent players have been victorious.”

With Park holding only a one-shot advantage over Tiley and several experienced professionals within striking distance, the Champions (UK) plc British Par 3 Championship remains wide open heading into Thursday’s deciding round.
