Last year’s champion Steven Tiley has completed the first round of the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship Pro-Am with a score of -5 making him the overnight leader going into tomorrow’s second, and final round of the Championship.
The reigning champion got his title defence off to the perfect possible start scoring five consecutive birdies. No player has ever successfully defended their title at the championship and Steven will be hoping to make history when the professional tournament comes to an end tomorrow.
Staysure Tour star Gary Wolstenholme MBE also put himself in contention with a stunning round which saw him score -3 scoring five birdies along the way.
PGA professional Jak Hamblett is a stroke behind Gary on -2 with five-time European Tour winner Jarmo Sandelin, Ladies European Tour player Lejan Lewthwaite, 2017 champion Richard O’Hanlon, Staysure Tour player Brendan McGovern and American Tim Thelen all tied on -1.
Two-time Major winner and event host, Tony Jacklin CBE, commented on the day’s action:
“Steven played outstandingly well today on what has been a fantastic opening day of the tournament. All of the professionals put on a great show out there on the course and it is perfectly poised for tomorrow’s grand finale. It is sure to be a remarkable occasion with plenty of fine golf on show and whoever comes out on top is sure to be a worthy champion.”
In the race for the Norma C Herd Silver Salver, which is awarded to the best performing amateur, there is currently a three way tie with Matt James, Neal Gooding and Monday’s Junior Qualifier, Josh Mulcahy, sharing the spoils on +1.
In the team aspect of the event Brendan McGovern and his amateur, ex-England cricket star James Taylor, Steven Tiley and former darts world champion Keith Deller and Steve Lewton and amateur Clive Whiting are tied on -7 at the top of the leader board. In the Super Senior category legendary Staysure Tour player Carl Mason has the lead with a score of +2.
Tomorrow the action continues from 7:00am where the 2019 Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship title and €50,000 first prize will be presented to this year’s champion.
More action continues tomorrow as the official Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship winner will be revealed after what is sure to be a tense final round.
